Our learners: Neighbors in our community.
Imagine not being able to read this sentence, open a bank account or find the right words to discuss an urgent problem with your doctor or your child’s teacher. Our adult learners struggle daily in these types of situations. We help adults improve their English so they may overcome challenges like these.
Our learners are adult men and women of all ages, nationalities, economic and social backgrounds. They are neighbors all around us -- individuals we may see down the street, at work, at school or at the local grocery store. Many learners come to our program because they cannot succeed in traditional classroom settings. They may not have reliable transportation, may have to stay at home with young children, or may feel uncomfortable because they have little schooling or a learning disability.
We are here to help. In our Adult Literacy Program we pair trained volunteer literacy tutors to work with learners 1-2 hours a week to help them learn to read, write, speak and understand English better so that they may achieve their personal and professional goals.
